چکیده

In many domains it is desirable to assess the preferences of users in a qualitative rather than quantitative way. Such representations of qualitative preference orderings form an important component of automated decision tools. We propose a graphical representation of preferences that reflects conditional dependence and independence of preference statements under a ceteris paribus (all else being equal) interpretation. Such a representation is often compact and arguably natural. We describe several search algorithms for dominance testing based on this representation; these algorithms are quite effective, especially in specific network topologies, such as chainand treestructured networks, as well as polytrees.

Upside-Down Preference Reversal: How to Override Ceteris-Paribus Preferences?

Specific preference statements may reverse general preference statements, thus constituting a change of attitude in particular situations. We define a semantics of preference reversal by relaxing the popular ceteris-paribus principle. We characterize preference reversal as default reasoning and we link it to prioritized Pareto-optimization, which permits a natural computation of preferred solut...

The local geometry of multiattribute tradeoff preferences

Existing representations for multiattribute ceteris paribus preference statements have provided useful treatments and clear semantics for qualitative comparisons, but have not provided similarly clear representations or semantics for comparisons involving quantitative tradeoffs. We use directional derivatives and other concepts from elementary differential geometry to interpret conditional mult...

CP-nets: A Tool for Representing and Reasoning withConditional Ceteris Paribus Preference Statements

Information about user preferences plays a key role in automated decision making. In many domains it is desirable to assess such preferences in a qualitative rather than quantitative way. In this paper, we propose a qualitative graphical representation of preferences that reflects conditional dependence and independence of preference statements under a ceteris paribus (all else being equal) int...

modeling and reasoning about preferences with cp - nets

Structured modeling of ceteris paribus qualitative preference statements, grounded in the notions of preferential independence, has tremendous potential to provide effective and efficient tools for modeling and reasoning about decision maker preferences in real-life applications. Within the AI and phylosophical logic communities, past work on qualitative preference representation has tended to ...
